Breaking silence, esteemed Malawian musician Teddy has announced, that he will finally be dropping his new long-awaited debut album later this month on the 27th of October.
The “Mtima” hitmaker has titled the upcoming album “MAKADI” and one can only say it is one of the most highly anticipated albums of the year.
MAKADI, which is two years in the making, explores the duality of life with a good number of songs themed around the ups (happiness, joy, love, faith) and downs (pain, despair, loss) of life. The album artwork meticulously designed by Hezdean can be deciphered in many ways, but the overall theme is the balance of life.
Teddy highlights that he worked with more than 10 producers and engineers including Ze Fiasto and Ckay, and it has 8 featured artists.
“I’ll share the tracklist in due time, but I believe everyone did a brilliant job when they delivered their performances on MAKADI. I also stressed the producers out for a long time, but the quality of the sound of this album is evidence of their hard work,” said Teddy.
“MAKADI has been one of my biggest challenges in my music career, but looking at the full body of work now I can confidently say that it’s my greatest achievement as well, and it’s about time I shared this with the world” the singer, and songwriter added.
Teddy has released multiple strings of singles over the past two years including “Give Up On Me”, “Mwana” and most recently “Yehova”, which are all singles on the album. The performance of these songs on the market has caused heads to turn and he is quickly cementing his name and sound within the industry.
Teddy (real name Teddy Maliza Jnr) is a Malawian singer, and songwriter. He started making music professionally in 2010 when he joined a gospel music group called BBM Clique with fellow musicians Bucci, KeiM, Armstrong (now Onesimus), AyKay, Gingy, and Robert.
After going solo, Teddy released his first single in 2014 titled “Nkhawa Bii”, which introduced his sound to the entertainment scene. Teddy released his debut EP titled “Aye” in 2020 and in 2021 he released “Mtima”, which some people say is a continuation of “Nkhawa Bii”, took the RnB scene by storm in Malawi and brought Teddy full circle as a key musician to the future of the Malawian sound.
Teddy’s inspiration ranges from a broad line-up of artists including Benjamin Dube, Marvin Sapp, and Wizkid and he believes his artistry was really energized after watching Ray Charles’ creative process.
As he looks forward to dominating the continent with his own sound, he looks towards Wizkid who he feels has pushed the limits of what it means to be an African artist and has opened so many doors for Afro-artists. He hopes to set a similar standard in Malawi and beyond.
His biggest career challenge so far has been working on his debut album, “MAKADI”, now also considered his greatest achievement.
