“Where Were You? When we Literally Had to Lick a DJ’s Feet to get AIRPLAY” – Ba Saga

The Legendary Zambian music pioneer, Che Mutale better known as Ba Saga who has been off the hype for nearly 10 years has a better suggestion were Mosi should invest their money instead holding award shows that will benefit a few Zambians.

Ba Saga was expected to unleash a comeback album late 2015… Read what he posted on his facebook account below;

Firstly i really am proud personally of what some of the new crop of artists are doing for the industry as a whole. Secondly my view on this issue on the ZMA awards is instead of channeling all that money into awards that only benefit a few people why not push it into music schools or film schools which will teach more deserving youths to learn about the industry.
Yes it is good to award the arts…but if i had that kind of money rather make a distribution label that can affiliate itself to bigger labels as EMI ,SONY, VIRGIN, MAYBACH MUSIC,just to mention a few and expose zambian musc to the world.We dont have a major distribution system that can do this thats why our art ends up just where it is is..its every man for himself…
I have worked personally with nearly every artist in zed ,now and then and as a pioneer let me say this……none of the so called new crop of artists would be enjoying the sweet success of the what they have now without the relentless and tiresome ,sometimes unforgiving effort by Mondo music and Muvi studios.
Where were you when JK,Amayaenge Muvi posse ,Mc Wabwino,Brian Chilala,Shatel,Danny Kaya,Ruff Kid,Daddy Zemus,Black Munthu,Joe Chibangu…..justto mention a few, had to perform for peanuts sometimes just for exposure at some shows coz nobody believed in zed music….NOBODY…Not even our own families and friends. Where were you when we would sleep in studios for nights to make the classics we listen to now..
where were you when you were not allowed to sing on the same stage as an international artist at the show grounds…now you can boast that you shared the stage with koffi or Patoranking
Where were you when the only group recognised outside Zambia was Sakala brothers or Amayaenge..going home with a K500 that time after playing for a jam packed crowd at Sams café…
Where were you when the Zambian industry was based on cassettes…no cd;s
Where you literally had to lick a dj;s feet to get airplay.Now you have your mates playing your stuff every day ,day in day out coz u live in the same hood.
I don’t care what car you drive or if you own 10 homes,coz some fool artist paved the way for you 10 -15 years ago so that you can enjoy running about…. we had to play it out in Kanyama or,Senior compound,Mbala,kitwe serenje, so that one day you, the new crop can even have this so called industry..
Respect the past coz wthout it they wud be no you…….we played our part in the struggle so as you may reap millions but that doesn’t make us foolish or irrelevant….
Keep up the good work but don’t forget…one day u will be as old as we are and some young version of you will look down at you as you are now doing to the legends of the industry…
