On Saturday (18 July) MTV Base celebrated the fifth edition of the MTV Africa Music Awards at the ICC in Durban. The show also marked ten years of VIMN in Africa and the birthday of the late Nelson Mandela.
Hosted by Anthony Anderson with performances from the USA’s Ne-Yo (with Nigeria’s Seyi Shay guesting!) and Jhené Aiko, and African artists like Diamond Platnumz, AKA, Cassper Nyovest, Bucie, Yemi Alade, D’banj, 2Face, Sauti Sol, Toofan, legendary South African maskandi guitarist Phuzekemisi and many more, the show was a massive hit on social media.
The #MTVMAMA2015 hashtag was top Twitter trend worldwide, as well as the UK, South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya. By the time the show ended, topics related to MAMA were all top ten trends in both SA and Nigeria.
