After an incredible 24-year run, one of Zambia’s most recognisable television eras is coming to an end. Veteran broadcaster Innocent Kalaluka, popularly known as Smooth IK, will host the final edition of his long-running entertainment programme, Smooth Talk, on ZNBC TV1.
For more than two decades, Smooth Talk has been a familiar part of Zambian television, entertaining audiences while providing an important platform for musicians, actors, comedians, educators and other creative voices.
The programme helped introduce audiences to countless personalities and cemented Smooth IK’s position as one of Zambia’s most respected and recognisable television personalities.
“Smooth Talk Was More Than Just a Television Show”
Announcing the end of the programme, Smooth IK shared an emotional farewell message, describing Smooth Talk as much more than a job.
“For 24 consecutive years, Smooth Talk has been far more than just a television show to me, it has been a home, a platform for talent, and a bridge to all of you across the nation.”
During its remarkable run, Smooth Talk produced an incredible 1,248 episodes, becoming one of the longest-running entertainment programmes associated with Zambian television.
For Smooth IK, however, saying goodbye has not been easy.
“Letting go of a journey that has defined so much of my life is nothing close to easy. I loved that show. But as the saying goes, everything has a season.”
A Platform That Helped Shape Zambia’s Creative Industry
Over the years, Smooth Talk became an important platform for Zambia’s growing entertainment and creative industries.
Established stars and upcoming talents alike were given an opportunity to appear on the programme, share their stories, promote their work and connect directly with television audiences across the country.
From musicians and actors to comedians, educators and other creative personalities, the programme opened its doors to voices from different corners of Zambian society.
Smooth IK expressed his gratitude to everyone who contributed to the programme’s journey.
“I am eternally grateful to ZNBC management, my incredible production team, every musician, actor, comedian, educator, and creative voice who walked through our studio doors, and above all, to you, the loyal viewers who welcomed me into your homes every week and made me who I am today.”
No More “See You in Seven Days”
Tonight’s final broadcast is expected to be an emotional celebration of the programme’s journey, revisiting memories and highlights from its remarkable 24-year history.
For generations of viewers, Smooth IK’s familiar presence became part of their weekly television routine.
But when the final credits roll, there will be one major difference.
There will be no familiar:
“See you in seven days.”
After 24 years, 1,248 episodes, countless interviews and unforgettable moments, the journey of Smooth Talk has finally reached its final chapter.
One era of Zambian television is coming to an end — but the legacy of Smooth IK and Smooth Talk will remain part of the country’s entertainment history.
