The Lusaka Magistrate Court has dismissed a request by social media personality Prudence “Mwizukanji” Nakamba to have musician Elton “Yo Maps” Mulenga increase monthly maintenance payments for their daughter, Bukata, from K3,000 due to the rising cost of living.
The court ruled that the application could not be addressed in the current proceedings because the case focused specifically on custody and access rights, not financial maintenance.
This development is part of an ongoing matter in which Yo Maps applied to vary a 2022 consent order as he sought primary custody of the child.
In her affidavit opposing Yo Maps’ application, Mwizukanji requested that the monthly child support be increased and further asked the court to compel Yo Maps to fully cover school fees and related expenses. She argued that living expenses had significantly risen since the initial order and that she had been providing a stable home for their daughter.
However, in his reply filed on September 2, 2025, Yo Maps opposed the request, calling it unreasonable. He stated that he was willing to continue paying school fees and reasonable child-related costs but argued that increasing maintenance was unfair.
Magistrate Kawama Mwamfuli stated that although the plea for higher maintenance was included in the affidavit, the issue was not properly placed before the court and could not be decided within the current custody proceedings.
“The issue of maintenance would be best resolved in a proper application where the court is moved and parties are given adequate opportunity to address the issues,” the magistrate ruled.
“I will accordingly decline to award this request, which was in any event not included in counsel’s oral submissions.”
The court also dismissed an application by Mwizukanji to expunge parts of an affidavit sworn by Kidist Mulenga, Yo Maps’ wife. Magistrate Mwamfuli clarified that there is no legal restriction preventing a non-party from swearing an affidavit in support of a case. This ruling marks another major development in the high-profile custody battle between the two public figures.
