Man Tells Matero Court: Wife Uses Chester’s “Mwakamba Late” Lyrics to Justify Gambling

A MAN has narrated in Matero Local Court how his wife, who is allegedly addicted to gambling, justifies her actions using a line from Chester’s song ‘Mwakamba Late’.

Tony Nchima, 37, of Lusaka’s Zingalume Township, said he was fed up of his wife, Prudence Nchima, 33, and their 13-year-old marriage because she has failed to quit playing a popular betting game called ‘ka Ndeke’.

In this case, Nchima sued his wife Prudence, of Lusaka’s Garden House area, for divorce. The two got married in 2012 and have four children. Dowry was paid.

Nchima said their marriage was good but that problems started when she revealed her true character to him.“I truly loved my wife but not anymore. She is a hard-core gambler. She locks herself in the bedroom playing aviator. I cannot stay with such a woman, she will one day land me into problems,” he said.

Nchima expressed concern that at the level that his wife has reached in terms of gambling, she could do anything for money. “Whenever I ask her to stop, she responds by singing ‘Mwakamba late, ninangenamo deep kale,’ (your concern has come a bit late, I am already deeply into it),” he said.

In her statement, Prudence said her husband stopped work two years ago, a situation that pushed her into gambling because she had to fend for the family. “I gamble but I use my husband’s phone and he permits me. My husband has a tendency of leaving home on pretext that he was going to church when he Infact goes to his girlfriend’s house,” she said.

In his judgment, Magistrate Lewis Mumba said Prudence had a problem of gambling and advised her to stop. Mr Mumba granted divorce and ordered Nchima to compensate his wife with K8,000 to be paid in K500 monthly instalments.
