Zambian music icon, Drimz has shared for the first time his instrumental role in the early career of chart-topping artist Yo Maps. Speaking on The Table Show, Drimz provided insight into the mentorship and support he offered when Yo Maps was still an aspiring musician.
Drimz recalled meeting Yo Maps in 2011, back when the singer was in Grade 11, and how he immediately recognized his talent. “I took him in, gave him exposure, and introduced him to my network,” Drimz said, emphasizing that much of Yo Maps’ early growth was facilitated by connections and opportunities he helped provide.
He further revealed that he contributed directly to Yo Maps’ music career, featuring on three of his early songs and even paying for the participation of established artists like Drifta Trek, Afunika, Jae Cash, Macky2, and Mampi to collaborate on tracks for the young singer. Drimz also financed Yo Maps’ first professional music video, which featured Jae Cash.
Despite Yo Maps wanting to sign under Drimz, he refused to formally sign him, believing that Yo Maps would thrive more freely if not limited under his management. “I didn’t want him to be limited; I was there to help him grow his brand,” Drimz emphasized.
Drimz’s candid account sheds light on the unseen efforts and sacrifices that go into nurturing talent behind the scenes, highlighting the often-overlooked role mentors play in shaping the next generation of Zambian artists.
