Diana Kalezhi Shares Insights on Making 82-Year-Old Margaret Chola an Accidental Fashion Icon

What started as an impromptu photo shoot has transformed 82-year-old Margaret Chola into an unexpected fashion sensation. Diana Kalezhi, a freelance stylist and creative consultant, shared the fascinating journey behind the viral “Grandma Series” that not only put her grandmother in the spotlight but also sparked conversations around fashion, age, and representation.

The series was born out of Kalezhi’s deep-rooted love for fashion, a passion she inherited from her father. Moving to New York City at a young age exposed her to the world of high-end fashion and vintage styles, inspiring her to create unique blends of modern and rustic aesthetics.

When Kalezhi proposed styling her grandmother in avant-garde outfits against the backdrop of her farm in Zambia, neither of them expected the overwhelming global response. “The idea was to challenge stereotypes, especially about Africa, which is often viewed through a limited lens,” Kalezhi explained. She wanted to showcase creativity and the rich beauty of the continent, using her grandmother as the focal point.

Despite her declining health, Grandma Chola embraced her new role. Their connection deepened as they collaborated remotely on the project. With local photographer Kooma Jnr and assistants in Zambia, the series has captivated audiences worldwide, celebrating both fashion and family.

Grandma Chola expressed her surprise and delight at her newfound fame, saying, “To see prints of myself in people’s homes has been overwhelming; I never imagined I would be loved that much.”
